Authors: Grieshaber SE, Farran AJ, Bai S, Kiick KL, Jia X Abstract We have synthesized elastin mimetic hybrid polymers (EMHPs) via the step-growth polymerization of azide-functionalized poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and alkyne-terminated peptide (AKAAAKA)2 (AK2) that is abundant in the crosslinking domains of the natural elastin. The modular nature of our synthesis allows facile adjustment of the peptide sequence to modulate the structural and biological properties of EMHPs. Thus, EMHPs containing cell-binding domains (CBD) were constructed from α,ω-azido-PEG and two types of alkyne-terminated AK2 peptides with sequences of DGRGX(AKAAAKA)2X (AK2-CBD1) and X(AKAAAKA)2XGGRGDSPG (AK2-CBD2, X = propargylglycine) via a step-growth, click coupling reaction

Authors: Kitano T, Yoda H, Tabata K, Miura M, Toriyama M, Motohashi S, Suzuki T Abstract We investigated the cytotoxicity of eight vitamin K3 (VK3) analogs against neuroblastoma cell lines (IMR-32, LA-N-1, NB-39, and SK-N-SH) and normal cell lines (human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) and human dermal fibroblasts (HDF)) using a 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay.

Authors: Neerincx A, Rodriguez GM, Steimle V, Kufer TA Abstract Nucleotide-binding domain and leucine-rich repeat (NLR) proteins play important roles in innate immune responses as pattern-recognition receptors.

Authors: Mu H, Calderone TL, Davies MA, Prieto V, Wang H, Mills GB, Bar-Eli M, Gershenwald JE Abstract The bioactive phospholipid lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) and its receptors LPA(1-3) are aberrantly expressed in many types of human cancer. LPA has been reported to induce tumor cell proliferation, migration, and cytokine production. However, whether LPA exerts an effect on lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs) or on lymphangiogenesis, a process of new lymphatic vessel formation that is associated with increased metastasis and poor prognosis in cancer patients, has been unknown

Authors: Ansurudeen I, Sunkari VG, Grünler J, Peters V, Schmitt CP, Catrina SB, Brismar K, Forsberg EA Abstract Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a progressive disorder with severe late complications. Normal wound healing involves a series of complex and well-orchestrated molecular events dictated by multiple factors. In diabetes, wound healing is grossly impaired due to defective, and dysregulated cellular and molecular events at all phases of wound healing resulting in chronic wounds that fail to heal

Authors: van de Kamp J, Kramann R, Anraths J, Schöler HR, Ko K, Knüchel R, Zenke M, Neuss S, Schneider RK Abstract For tissue engineering, cultivation of pluripotent stem cells on three-dimensional scaffolds allows the generation of organ-like structures. Previously, we have established an organotypic culture system of skin to induce epidermal differentiation in adult stem cells.

This article is part of a Special Issue entitled Lactoferrin and has undergone the Journal’s usual peer review process. Biochem Cell Biol. 2012 Feb 14; Authors: Ishii N, Kobayashi T, Matsumiya K, Ryu M, Hirata Y, Matsumura Y, Suzuki YA Abstract Lactoferrin (Lf), a multifunctional glycoprotein, is known to activate dermal fibroblasts

Authors: Moon H, Yong H, Lee AR Abstract To evaluate a potential anti-scar therapy, we first need to have a reliable in vitro wound model to understand dermal fibroblast response upon cell injury and how cytokine levels are changed upon different wound heal phases.

Authors: Morey TE, Wasdo S, Wishin J, Quinn B, van der Straten A, Booth M, Gonzalez D, Derendorf H, Melker RJ, Dennis DM Abstract Adherence to microbicide gel use is critical to optimizing effectiveness in preventing human immunodeficiency virus transmission. The authors hypothesized that ester taggants added to vaginal gels would generate exhaled alcohol and ketone metabolites and provide a “breath test” for vaginal gel use

Authors: Gavini A, Telang GH, Olszewski AJ Abstract A 72-year-old woman presented with dyspnea and lower extremity edema. Extreme lymphocytosis, cytopenia, and splenomegaly were found, and she was diagnosed with B-prolymphocytic leukemia.
